Trento sits in the Adige Valley in northern Italy, capital of the autonomous province of Trentino. The Alps rise sharply on three sides, placing ski resorts within 30 km of the city center. The Council of Trent — the Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation — met here between 1545 and 1563, shaping European history for centuries.
