Hotels in Chefchaouen

The medina's Uta el-Hammam square and the kasbah district suit travelers who want to be inside the blue-washed lanes; the Ain Tissimane quarter, near the Spanish Mosque hill, offers quieter guesthouses with mountain views. Most visitors stay two nights. Chefchaouen is roughly 4 hours by bus from Fes or 3.5 hours from Tangier.

Where to Stay

The medina centers on Plaza Uta el-Hammam, flanked by the 15th-century kasbah — now a garden museum — and a cluster of café terraces. Riads and small hotels here put guests within a 2-minute walk of the square. The kasbah district occupies the densest part of the old city: narrow alleys painted in shades of indigo and cornflower, artisan workshops, and rooftop terraces looking out over the Rif ridgeline. The Ain Tissimane quarter climbs uphill toward the Spanish Mosque, a 20-minute walk from the square; guesthouses here are smaller and calmer, with open views of the surrounding peaks.

Getting Around

Chefchaouen's medina spans roughly 1 km end to end and is fully pedestrianized — no vehicles enter the lanes. The CTM bus station sits at the foot of the hill, about 500 m from the medina gate. Grand taxis connect the station to the gate and run fixed routes to Tetouan (1 hour) and Fes.

Practical Tips

• Best season: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer mild Rif Mountain temperatures; July–August can reach 35 °C.
• Currency: Moroccan dirham (MAD); many small guesthouses are cash-only.
• Luggage: Wheeled bags struggle on cobblestones — pack a backpack or hire a porter at the medina gate.
• Language: Darija Arabic and Tarifit Berber predominate; Spanish is understood by many older residents.
