Auckland: Harbour City Between Two Coasts

Auckland sits on a narrow isthmus in the Northland region of New Zealand's North Island, flanked by the Waitematā Harbour to the east and the Manukau Harbour to the west. The city occupies land shaped by 53 dormant volcanic cones, including Maungawhau / Mount Eden, which rises 196 metres and offers a clear view of the Sky Tower — the Southern Hemisphere's tallest freestanding structure at 328 metres, completed in 1997. Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster around the CBD, Viaduct Harbour, and Parnell. The Viaduct draws visitors for its waterfront restaurants and marina access; Parnell offers quieter boutique options within walking distance of the Auckland Domain and the War Memorial Museum. Ponsonby Road, 2 km west of the CBD, is the dining and bar corridor for travellers who prefer a residential neighbourhood atmosphere.

• Getting around: The AT Metro train network connects the airport at Māngere to Britomart station in about 45 minutes via the Airport to City Rail Link (opening 2025–2030 phased); until full opening, the AirportLink bus runs every 10 minutes.
• Best time to visit: November to March for warmest temperatures (average 23 °C highs).
• Ferries: Regular Fullers services cross to Waiheke Island in 35 minutes from Downtown Ferry Terminal.
