About Taupo

Taupo: Gateway to the Volcanic Plateau

Taupo sits on the northern shore of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake at 616 km², formed by a supervolcanic eruption around 186 AD — one of the most violent eruptions in recorded history. The town of roughly 23,000 residents sits in the Waikato region of the North Island, 280 km south of Auckland. The Waikato River exits the lake here, dropping 7 metres over the Huka Falls just 2 km north of the town centre — a key landmark visited by over 1 million travellers a year.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters along Lake Terrace and the Roberts Street strip, putting guests within walking distance of the lakefront marina and the geothermal Taupo Hot Springs. Properties range from lakeside motels to lodges near the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trailhead, 80 km south via State Highway 1. Skydiving operators on Anzac Memorial Drive make Taupo one of New Zealand's most recognised drop-zone towns.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Taupo Airport serves flights from Auckland; drive time from Wellington is roughly 4 hours.
  • Best season: November to April for lake swimming and outdoor activities; winter suits skiers heading to Whakapapa or Turoa skifields on Mt Ruapehu.
  • Geothermal access: Craters of the Moon reserve, 5 km north, is free to enter and shows active steam vents.
