Tauranga sits on the western shore of Tauranga Harbour in the Bay of Plenty, roughly 85 km southeast of Hamilton and 200 km south of Auckland. Mount Maunganui suits beach-focused visitors: the 232-metre volcanic cone Mauao rises at the tip of the peninsula and takes roughly 45 minutes to summit. Papamoa, 10 km east of the Mount, offers quieter beachfront accommodation closer to the surf.
