About Napier
Napier: Art Deco Capital of the Southern Hemisphere
Napier, on the eastern coast of New Zealand's Hawke's Bay region, was largely destroyed by a magnitude-7.8 earthquake on 3 February 1931. The city was rebuilt almost entirely in the Art Deco and Spanish Mission styles fashionable at the time, leaving a streetscape that remains one of the most coherent examples of interwar architecture in the world. Tennyson Street and Emerson Street anchor the compact CBD, where geometric facades, sunburst motifs, and pastel render line nearly every block.
Where to Stay in Napier
Most hotels and boutique guesthouses concentrate within walking distance of the National Aquarium of New Zealand and Marine Parade, the seafront promenade stretching south from the city centre. The Ahuriri harbour precinct, roughly 2 km north-west of the CBD, offers converted warehouses and smaller lodges close to the estuary. Hawke's Bay wine country — home to over 40 wineries including Craggy Range and Mission Estate, New Zealand's oldest winery (established 1851) — sits 15–20 minutes by car.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Napier Airport (NPE) receives direct flights from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch; the CBD is 4 km from the terminal.
- Art Deco Weekend: The annual festival held each February draws around 50,000 visitors — book accommodation several months ahead.
- Climate: Hawke's Bay averages over 2,200 sunshine hours per year; pack a layer for evening sea breezes along Marine Parade.
