Rotorua sits on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua, 234 km south of Auckland in the Bay of Plenty region. Accommodation concentrates along Fenton Street, the main hotel corridor running south from the lakefront toward Whakarewarewa. The City Centre offers mid-range hotels within 10 minutes' walk of Government Gardens and the Rotorua Museum (closed for earthquake strengthening since 2016). Ngongotahā, on the western shore of the lake, provides quieter options near Wingspan Birds of Prey.

• Sulphur smell: Normal throughout the city — strongest near Kuirau Park, which has free public hot pools.

• Day trips: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland lies 27 km south on SH5.
