About Rotorua
Rotorua: Geothermal Heart of the North Island
Rotorua sits on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua, 234 km south of Auckland in the Bay of Plenty region. The city's identity is shaped by the Taupo Volcanic Zone — geysers, boiling mud pools, and sulphur vents are visible within walking distance of the central business district. Te Puia, the geothermal reserve in Whakarewarewa, hosts Pōhutu Geyser, which erupts up to 20 times daily and reaches 30 metres. The area has been home to Ngāti Whakaue and other Tūhourangi hapū for over 600 years, and Māori cultural experiences here are among the most substantive in New Zealand.
Where to Stay in Rotorua
Accommodation concentrates along Fenton Street, the main hotel corridor running south from the lakefront toward Whakarewarewa. The City Centre offers mid-range hotels within 10 minutes' walk of Government Gardens and the Rotorua Museum (closed for earthquake strengthening since 2016). Ngongotahā, on the western shore of the lake, provides quieter options near Wingspan Birds of Prey.
Practical Tips

- Timing: The Matariki festival (Māori New Year) draws large crowds in June–July.
- Day trips: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland lies 27 km south on SH5.
