About Alcúdia
Alcúdia: Walled Medieval Town on Mallorca's North Coast
Alcúdia sits on a narrow isthmus in northern Mallorca, 54 km northeast of Palma de Mallorca. The 14th-century defensive walls encircle the old town, where Roman ruins from the settlement of Pollentia (founded 123 BC) lie beside a weekly market held every Tuesday and Sunday. The Parc Natural de s'Albufera, a 1,700-hectare wetland reserve, begins just south of the bay and records over 200 bird species annually.
Where to Stay in Alcúdia
Most hotels cluster along Platja d'Alcúdia, a 5 km arc of fine sand stretching south toward Can Picafort. The Port d'Alcúdia marina zone offers apartments and mid-range hotels within walking distance of ferry terminals connecting to Ciutadella in Menorca. The walled old town itself holds a smaller stock of boutique guesthouses, suited to travelers prioritising the Roman and medieval heritage over beach access.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Palma Airport (PMI) is roughly 60 km by road; bus line 352 runs from Palma to Port d'Alcúdia.
- Ferry connections: Baleària and Trasmediterránea operate crossings to Ciutadella (Menorca) from Port d'Alcúdia, journey around 1 hour by fast ferry.
- Best time: May–June and September see lower prices than July–August peak; s'Albufera birdwatching peaks in spring migration.
