About Artà

Artà

Artà sits in the northeast corner of Mallorca, roughly 70 km from Palma, at the edge of the Serra de Llevant hills. The town is defined by its medieval silhouette — the fortified Sanctuary of Sant Salvador crowns the hill above the old quarter, reachable by a stepped pilgrims' path flanked by cypress trees. Below it, the parish church of Transfiguració del Senyor dates to the 14th century and anchors the Plaça de l'Ajuntament.

Two sites set Artà apart from other Mallorcan towns. Ses Païsses, a Bronze Age Talaiotic settlement on the outskirts, contains one of the best-preserved prehistoric enclosures in the Balearic Islands — its monumental gateway is built from stones weighing several tonnes. Three kilometres to the east, the Coves d'Artà open into the coastal cliffs above the Badia de Capdepera; explorers mapped the cavern system in the 19th century and Jules Verne is said to have drawn on descriptions of it for his fiction. Visitors who stay in or near the town also reach the beaches of Canyamel and the Cap Vermell headland within 15 minutes by car.

Artà attracts walkers, archaeology enthusiasts, and travellers seeking inland Mallorca away from the resort coastline. The weekly Tuesday market in the town centre has operated for centuries. The nearest airport is Palma Son Sant Joan, approximately 75 km southwest via the Ma-15 road.
