About Aljaraque
Aljaraque
Aljaraque sits on the western bank of the Odiel estuary in Huelva province, Andalusia — roughly 7 kilometres from the centre of Huelva city. The town borders the Marismas del Odiel, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covering 7,185 hectares of marshland that shelters spoonbills, flamingos, and one of Europe's largest breeding colonies of spoonbills. That proximity to protected wetlands shapes the character of the place: open skies, low-rise streets, and direct access to cycling and walking paths that thread through the reserve.
Most visitors are here for one of three reasons — birdwatching in the Odiel marshes, beach access along the nearby Costa de la Luz, or as a quieter base for day trips into Huelva city and the Colombine lands where Columbus departed for the Americas in 1492. The Monastery of La Rábida, where Columbus secured royal backing for his voyage, stands about 12 kilometres south. Palos de la Frontera, the actual departure port, is within 15 kilometres.
Aljaraque itself is a compact residential municipality of around 20,000 inhabitants. Local infrastructure is straightforward — supermarkets, restaurants serving Huelva's renowned Iberian ham and fresh Atlantic seafood, and reliable bus connections into Huelva. The Atlantic coast beaches at Punta Umbría are reachable in under 20 minutes by car.
