Plan your stay in Cartaya, Huelva — gateway to El Rompido beach, the Piedras estuary, and Andalusia's Atlantic coast, 30 km west of Huelva city.
Cartaya is a municipality in Huelva province, Andalusia, southwestern Spain — roughly 30 km west of the city of Huelva and about 70 km from Portugal's border. The town sits between the pine forests of the El Rompido natural area and the strawberry fields that define the local agricultural economy. Its coastline on the Gulf of Cádiz includes El Rompido beach, a narrow sand spit stretching several kilometres into the estuary of the Piedras River.
Most visitors arrive for the beaches between June and September, when Atlantic water temperatures reach 22–24 °C. El Rompido draws families and watersport enthusiasts — the estuary is a recognised spot for windsurfing and kayaking. Bird-watchers target the Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha del Rompido Natural Park, a protected wetland where flamingos and spoonbills feed year-round. The town's historic centre holds a 16th-century parish church, Iglesia de San Pedro, and a small weekly market on Thursdays.
Cartaya's population is around 19,000 residents. The nearest commercial airport is Faro, Portugal, approximately 55 km southwest — a practical entry point for international travellers visiting the western Huelva coast.
