Lepe is a mid-sized municipality in Huelva province, Andalusia, southwestern Spain. It sits roughly 100 km west of Seville and about 5 km from the Atlantic coast. The town is one of Spain's leading strawberry-producing areas — the surrounding farmland supplies a large share of Europe's early-season crop each year. Beyond agriculture, Lepe borders the Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha del Rompido Natural Park, a protected wetland and barrier spit that draws birdwatchers and walkers.
Visitors come for the nearby beach at El Rompido, a narrow sand peninsula that extends into the Río Piedras estuary. The beach is accessible by ferry from the town of El Portil or by road through Cartaya. The historic town centre retains a modest medieval street plan with a parish church dating to the 15th century. Lepe is also well known across Spain as the subject of a long-running tradition of regional jokes — a cultural curiosity that has given the town unexpected national recognition.
The nearest international airport is Faro in Portugal, approximately 60 km to the west — often a faster option than Seville for travellers arriving by air. The town has direct bus connections to Huelva city, about 50 km east.
