Punta Umbría is a Spanish Atlantic beach town in Huelva province, bordering a UNESCO biosphere reserve with 10 km of sandy coastline.
Punta Umbría is a coastal town in Huelva province, southwestern Spain, positioned where the Odiel and Tinto rivers meet the Atlantic Ocean. The town sits on a narrow sand peninsula — roughly 12 kilometres from the city of Huelva — and is defined by its long Atlantic beach, pine forests, and the Marismas del Odiel Biosphere Reserve that borders it to the north. The reserve, designated by UNESCO, shelters one of Europe's largest spoonbill colonies and draws birdwatchers throughout the year.
Most visitors arrive between June and September, when Punta Umbría functions as a beach resort for families from Huelva and Seville. The main beach stretches over 10 kilometres, with calm conditions suitable for swimming and a consistent Atlantic breeze that attracts windsurfers. The town's seafood restaurants along Avenida del Océano serve locally caught prawns from the nearby Huelva coast — a product with protected geographical status. Outside summer, the town is quiet, with a permanent population of around 15,000 residents.
Punta Umbría is accessible by road via the A-494 from Huelva, a journey of approximately 20 minutes by car. A seasonal ferry service also connects the town to Huelva city across the Odiel estuary. The nearest major airport is Faro in Portugal, roughly 100 kilometres to the west, though Seville Airport is approximately 115 kilometres northeast and serves more domestic and European routes.
