San Juan del Puerto sits on the eastern bank of the Odiel River estuary, 12 km from Huelva city in the province of Huelva, Andalusia. The town grew around agriculture and fishing along the marshlands that now form part of the Marismas del Odiel Biosphere Reserve — a UNESCO-designated wetland declared in 1983 and home to one of Europe's largest spoonbill colonies. The historic parish church of San Juan Bautista, with its whitewashed tower visible from the N-435 highway, anchors the compact old quarter.

Visitors come primarily for access to the Odiel marshes, birdwatching routes, and the quiet Andalusian pace of a working agricultural town. The surrounding countryside produces strawberries, blueberries, and citrus under the Huelva Protected Geographical Indication — fruit farms line the roads between San Juan and the coast. Day-trippers also pass through en route to the Columbus monuments at La Rábida monastery, roughly 20 km southwest, or the beach resorts of Punta Umbría and Mazagón.

The town connects to Huelva by the A-472 road and sits within 90 minutes of Seville via the A-49 motorway. Local accommodation is limited — most visitors base themselves in Huelva city or the coast — but the town offers a practical, low-cost alternative for those attending the annual Colombinas festivals or exploring the Ruta Colombina heritage corridor.
