Hotels in Formentera

Formentera is the smallest and southernmost of Spain's Balearic Islands, sitting roughly 7 kilometres south of Ibiza across the Es Freus strait. The island covers just 83 square kilometres yet holds some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean — visibility can reach 50 metres in places, a result of the protected Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows that filter the sea floor. The main settlement, Sant Francesc Xavier, functions as the administrative capital, while the long sandy spit of Es Trucadors in the north draws most of the beach crowds.

Visitors arrive primarily for the beaches — Ses Illetes and Migjorn are consistently ranked among Europe's best — and for the unhurried pace that larger Balearic islands have largely lost. Day-trippers cross from Ibiza by ferry in as little as 25 minutes, though many choose to stay longer to cycle the flat interior on the network of marked green routes. Divers, windsurfers, and kitesurfers target the island for its reliable summer winds and protected coves. Artists and writers have been drawn here since the 1960s, when figures like Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan spent time on the island.

Formentera has no airport. All arrivals come by sea through the port of La Savina, with regular ferry services from Ibiza, Dénia, and Barcelona. The island enforces strict vehicle limits during peak summer months — private cars from the mainland require advance permits — making bicycle and scooter rental the practical choice for most visitors.
