Los Llanos de Aridane sits in the Aridane Valley on the western slope of La Palma, the westernmost island of Spain's Canary Islands. With roughly 20,000 residents, it is the most populous municipality on the island — a working Canarian town built around banana cultivation and commerce rather than mass tourism. The colonial-era Plaza de España anchors the center, flanked by the 16th-century church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and shaded by centuries-old laurel trees. Streets of whitewashed houses and local tapas bars give the town an everyday Spanish character that contrasts sharply with the resort strips found elsewhere in the archipelago.
Visitors use Los Llanos as a base for the Aridane Valley and the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, whose rim sits roughly 10 km to the east. Hikers, astronomers, and nature travelers make up the majority of arrivals — La Palma holds a UNESCO Starlight Reserve designation, and clear nights here are among the darkest in Europe. The 2021 eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, located about 5 km southeast, reshaped the southwestern coastline and drew significant scientific and media attention; lava fields from that event remain visible and are now a point of geological interest.
The nearest airport, La Palma Airport (SPC), lies approximately 15 km north of the town center. Direct flights connect to mainland Spanish cities and select European destinations. Local buses (guaguas) link Los Llanos to Santa Cruz de La Palma, the island capital, in under an hour.
