Tijarafe, La Palma: ridge-top village with dark-sky hiking, volcanic ravines, and a 16th-century church — 30 km from Santa Cruz de La Palma.

Tijarafe sits on the steep western ridge of La Palma, one of Spain's Canary Islands, roughly 30 km north of the island capital Santa Cruz de La Palma. The municipality rises sharply from sea cliffs to pine-forested highlands above 1,000 m — a contrast that defines its landscape. The village centre clusters around the 16th-century Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua, a whitewashed church that anchors the main square. Surrounding terraces grow avocados, bananas, and the local grapevines that feed La Palma's small wine industry.
Visitors come primarily for hiking and rural quiet. The GR 130 long-distance trail passes through the area, connecting Tijarafe to the broader network that spans La Palma. The Barranco del Jurado ravine draws walkers seeking dramatic volcanic scenery without the crowds of Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Stargazers also make the trip — La Palma holds the world's first Starlight Reserve designation, and the dark skies above Tijarafe's ridgeline are well inside the protected zone.
The municipality has a permanent population of around 2,500 people. The nearest airport is La Palma Airport (SPC), located approximately 25 km to the south. Accommodation options in the area lean toward rural casas and small guesthouses rather than large hotel chains.
