About Tazacorte
Tazacorte
Tazacorte sits on the western coast of La Palma, Canary Islands, roughly 20 kilometres from the island capital Santa Cruz de La Palma. The town divides into two distinct zones: the elevated historic centre, where 16th-century colonial architecture lines narrow streets above banana plantations, and Puerto de Tazacorte below — a working fishing harbour that doubles as the island's main beach resort. The black volcanic sand of Playa de Tazacorte stretches along a sheltered bay fed by Atlantic swells, making it a consistent draw for swimmers and divers exploring the underwater lava formations offshore.
Visitors arrive primarily for La Palma's reputation as the world's first Starlight Reserve — certified in 2012 — and Tazacorte's western exposure gives clear sunset and night-sky views across open ocean. The surrounding Aridane Valley produces some of the Canaries' highest-grade bananas; roadside stalls sell them direct from plantations within walking distance of the seafront. The 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption deposited lava fields roughly 5 kilometres to the south, and guided tours of the new terrain now draw geology-focused travellers.
Most accommodation concentrates in Puerto de Tazacorte within 300 metres of the beach. The LP-2 coastal road connects Tazacorte to Los Llanos de Aridane, the island's largest town, in under 10 minutes by car.
