About Níjar
Níjar
Níjar is a municipality in Almería province, southeastern Spain, set inland from the Costa de Almería at roughly 35 km from Almería city. The town centre sits at around 400 m elevation in the Sierra Alhamilla foothills — a position that shaped its Moorish street layout and traditional whitewashed architecture. Níjar has been a ceramics hub since at least the 16th century; its distinctive jarapas (woven rugs) and hand-painted pottery are still sold in workshops along Calle Real.
Most visitors come for two reasons: the craft tradition and the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997, the park covers over 49,000 hectares of volcanic coastline, salt flats, and semi-arid scrubland — the driest corner of Europe. Beaches such as Playa de los Genoveses and Cala de Monsul sit within the park boundaries and remain free of large hotel developments. Birdwatchers target the Salinas de Cabo de Gata lagoon, a staging point for flamingos and waders on Atlantic–African migration routes.
The area draws Spanish domestic tourists, European nature travellers, and photographers attracted by the spare desert landscape. Almería Airport (LEI) is approximately 40 km from Níjar town, with connections to major European cities — journey time to the park coast from the airport runs about 45–50 minutes by car.
