About Portonovo
Portonovo: Atlantic Coast Village on the Ría de Pontevedra
Portonovo sits on the southern shore of the Ría de Pontevedra in Galicia, Spain, roughly 75 km south of Santiago de Compostela. The town borders Sanxenxo, one of Galicia's busiest resort municipalities, yet retains a working fishing-port character. The harbour launches daily catches of razor clams, percebes (barnacles), and turbot — species tied directly to the cold Atlantic upwelling of the Rías Baixas.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and apartment rentals cluster along Praia de Portonovo and the parallel seafront road, placing guests within 200 metres of the beach. The Illa de Ons, a national-park island visible from shore, draws day-trippers via ferry from the town pier (seasonal, roughly June–September). Visitors tend to be Spanish domestic travellers — particularly from Madrid and the Basque Country — plus Portuguese guests crossing from the north.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: The nearest rail station is Pontevedra, 18 km east; taxis and local buses connect to Portonovo.
- Best season: July and August bring the warmest water temperatures (around 19 °C) but also peak crowds.
- Local food: Order polbo á feira (Galician octopus) at any market stall near the harbour rather than tourist-facing restaurants on the promenade.
