About Valle Gran Rey
Valle Gran Rey
Valle Gran Rey sits on the western coast of La Gomera, one of the smaller Canary Islands, roughly 30 km west of the island's capital San Sebastián de La Gomera. The valley descends sharply from the central laurisilva forest of Garajonay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 — down to a coastline of black volcanic beaches and calm Atlantic waters. The village itself divides into several small settlements: La Calera on the hillside, and Vueltas and La Playa near the shore.
The town draws a distinct mix of visitors. Northern European long-stay travelers, many from Germany and Scandinavia, have been coming since the 1970s, drawn by a warm, stable climate and a slower pace than the larger Canary Islands. Hikers use Valle Gran Rey as a base for routes into Garajonay's ancient cloud forest. Divers and snorkelers work the rocky coastal waters. Families with children favor the sheltered harbor beach at Vueltas. The local fishing fleet still operates from the small port there.
Ferry connections link Valle Gran Rey to San Sebastián de La Gomera in approximately 50 minutes, with onward connections to Tenerife's Los Cristianos port. The nearest airport is on Tenerife South (TFS), about 120 km away including the ferry crossing. Most accommodations in the valley are small apartment complexes and guesthouses rather than large resort hotels.
