About Vallehermoso
Vallehermoso
Vallehermoso sits in the northwest of La Gomera, Canary Islands, defined by the 650-metre basalt pillar Roque Cano that rises directly above the village. The municipality covers deep ravines carved by ancient volcanic activity, with terraced slopes planted with palm trees, banana groves, and traditional Canarian crops. The village centre preserves low-rise whitewashed architecture typical of the inner Gomera — far removed from the resort strips of Tenerife, 28 km to the northeast across the strait.
Visitors come primarily for hiking. The GR-132 long-distance trail passes through, connecting Vallehermoso to the UNESCO-listed Garajonay National Park, whose laurisilva cloud forest covers the island's central plateau. Birdwatchers target the Bolle's pigeon and the white-tailed laurel pigeon, both endemic to the Macaronesian laurel forests. The nearby Playa de Vallehermoso — a black-sand beach backed by cliffs — offers swimming outside peak swell months. The area also produces palm honey (miel de palma), extracted from the Canarian date palm and sold locally.
La Gomera is reached by ferry from Los Cristianos in southern Tenerife; the crossing takes approximately 50 minutes. Vallehermoso is roughly 25 km by road from San Sebastián de La Gomera, the island's capital and main ferry terminal. Accommodation in the municipality runs to rural houses and small guesthouses rather than large hotels.
