Bukhara stands among the oldest cities in Central Asia, with a recorded history stretching back 2,500 years. Located in central Uzbekistan, roughly 270 km west of Samarkand along the historic Silk Road corridor, the city preserves a dense medieval core that UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1993. The Kalon Minaret, built in 1127, rises 47 metres above the old town and remains the city's defining silhouette. • Getting there: Bukhara has a domestic airport with daily flights from Tashkent (1 hr); the Afrosiyob high-speed train covers Tashkent–Bukhara in roughly 3 hours.
• Best months: April–May and September–October offer mild temperatures; summers exceed 40 °C.
• Currency: Uzbekistani som; card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels, so carry cash.
