The most convenient bases in Bukhara are the Old City (Shahristan), within walking distance of the Kalon Minaret and Ark Fortress; Lyabi-Hauz square for teahouse-lined streets and the historic pond; and the area around Poi Kalon complex for proximity to the finest medieval architecture. Most visitors stay two to three nights; Bukhara International Airport is 4 km east of the centre.

Shahristan (the walled Old City) puts guests within 10 minutes on foot of the Ark Fortress, a citadel in continuous use since the 5th century. Lyabi-Hauz, the 1620 reservoir square, suits travellers who want evening atmosphere and shaded café seating. The streets immediately north of Poi Kalon — the ensemble of the Kalon Minaret (built 1127), Kalon Mosque, and Mir-i-Arab Madrasa — offer boutique guesthouses in converted merchant houses, known locally as havelis.

Getting Around

Bukhara's core monuments cluster within a 1.5 km radius, making the Old City walkable. Shared taxis (marshrutkas) connect the airport and the train station, 11 km east of centre, to downtown for under 10,000 UZS. The high-speed Afrosiyob rail service links Bukhara to Samarkand in roughly 1.5 hours and to Tashkent in about 4 hours.
