About Bastia
Bastia: Corsica's Northern Port and Genoese Capital
Bastia, on Corsica's northeastern tip, served as the island's Genoese capital from the 14th century until 1811. The Vieux-Port district frames a semicircular harbour ringed by ochre tenements, fishing boats, and the 15th-century Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, whose twin bell towers dominate the waterfront skyline. The Terra Vecchia quarter climbs behind the port through narrow lanes to the Citadelle, a Genoese fortress housing the Musée de Bastia and panoramic views across the Tyrrhenian Sea toward the Italian mainland, roughly 80 km east.
Where to Stay in Bastia
Most hotels concentrate along Boulevard Paoli, the main commercial artery, and near Place Saint-Nicolas, a tree-lined square running 300 metres along the seafront. Accommodation close to the ferry terminal suits travellers arriving from Marseille, Nice, or Livorno — crossings take 5 to 12 hours depending on the route. The Toga marina area, 1 km north of the centre, offers quieter options with direct sea access.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Bastia Poretta Airport sits 20 km south; buses to the city centre run every 30–40 minutes.
- Getting around: The narrow streets of Terra Vecchia and the Citadelle are pedestrian-only; flat shoes are advisable.
- Timing: The annual Bastia Film Festival (World Cinema) takes place each November, filling central hotels weeks in advance.
