Porto-Vecchio: Citadel Town on Corsica's Southern Gulf

Porto-Vecchio sits at the head of a deep natural gulf in southern Corsica, roughly 130 km south of Bastia via the N198. The Genoese citadel, built in 1539, anchors the upper town with rampart walls, ochre-stone lanes, and a central square lined with café terraces. Below, the marina hosts charter yachts and ferry connections to Marseille and Livorno. The town draws French and Italian visitors in July and August, when the population swells from around 13,000 to over 100,000.

Where to Stay in Porto-Vecchio

Most hotels concentrate in three zones: the Haute Ville (citadel quarter) for walkable access to restaurants; the marina district for early ferry departures; and the Palombaggia corridor, 8 km south, where resort properties sit closest to the white-sand beaches rated among Corsica's finest. Santa Giulia Bay, 10 km south, offers shallow lagoon water and attracts windsurfers.

• Getting there: Figari–Sud Corse Airport (FSC) lies 25 km north; car hire is strongly advised as bus services are limited outside summer.
• Season: Hotels fill from late June through August; shoulder months (May, September) offer lower rates and cooler temperatures.
