About Calvi
Calvi: Citadel Town on the Balagne Coast
Calvi sits at the northwestern tip of Corsica, 94 km from Bastia by road. The Genoese citadel, constructed in the 13th century and reinforced through the 15th century, dominates a rocky headland above the Quai Landry marina. Local tradition holds that Christopher Columbus was born in Calvi in 1451, though documentary evidence remains inconclusive. Below the fortress walls, the Baie de Calvi curves for 4 km — a beach of pale sand backed by parasol pines — which draws the majority of summer visitors between June and September.
Where to Stay
Hotels divide between two zones. The marine quarter around the port and Quai Landry puts guests within a five-minute walk of restaurants, the beach, and the citadel entrance. Hillside roads toward Lumio and the Balagne interior offer quieter properties with sea views. Calvi–Sainte-Catherine Airport, 7 km southeast, operates seasonal routes from Paris, Lyon, and several northern European cities from April through October. The narrow-gauge Tramways de la Corse railway links Calvi to Île-Rousse (45 min) and Bastia (3 hrs).
Practical Tips
- Season: July and August bring peak occupancy; June and September offer warm sea temperatures with shorter queues.
- Getting around: The citadel is pedestrian-only — wear flat shoes on the cobbled lanes.
- Currency: Euro; card payments accepted at most hotels and restaurants.
