About Ajaccio
Ajaccio: Corsican Capital on the Gulf
Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, sits on the western shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio, roughly 170 km south of the French mainland by air. The city is the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte, born here on 15 August 1769 at what is now the Maison Bonaparte on Rue Saint-Charles — a national museum open year-round. The old town, known as Borgu, clusters around the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption (completed 1593) and the Citadelle, a 15th-century Genoese fortress jutting into the harbour. Streets narrow toward the Place Foch, where café terraces face the marina directly.
Where to Stay in Ajaccio
Most hotels concentrate along the Cours Napoléon, the main commercial avenue, and the Quai de la Grande Armée waterfront. The Les Sanguinaires peninsula, 12 km west of the centre, offers quieter properties with sea views. Summer visitors fill rooms from late June through August; shoulder-season travellers in May and September find lower rates and smaller crowds at the beach.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Aéroport d'Ajaccio Napoléon Bonaparte (AJA) handles direct flights from Paris, Lyon, and Marseille; the airport is 8 km east of the city centre.
- Getting around: The TCA city bus network covers the centre and Les Sanguinaires; ferries from Marseille, Nice, and Toulon dock at the Port de Commerce.
- Climate: July averages 27 °C; pack a layer for mountain excursions toward the Col de Verghio.
