About Propriano
Propriano: Gateway to the Gulf of Valinco
Propriano sits at the head of the Gulf of Valinco on Corsica's southwestern coast, roughly 70 km south of Ajaccio. The town grew around a natural deep-water port that has served traders since antiquity, and today its marina accommodates sailing yachts alongside fishing vessels. The surrounding hillsides carry maquis scrubland — the dense aromatic brush of rosemary, cistus, and myrtle that defines inland Corsica. Beaches such as Capo di Feno and Baracci extend north and south of the harbour, with fine-sand shorelines sheltered by the gulf's wide curve.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along the Rue Général de Gaulle seafront strip and the marina quay. Smaller guesthouses sit on the hillside above town, offering views across the gulf toward the Aiguilles de Bavella ridge to the east. The town serves as a base for day trips to Filitosa, a prehistoric menhir site 17 km north, and to the Alta Rocca highland villages inland.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferries from Marseille and Toulon dock at the port; the nearest airport is Figari–Sud Corse, 45 km southeast.
- Best months: May–June and September for warm water without peak-August crowds.
- Local transport: Renting a car is practical — bus service along the coast is limited outside summer.
