About Eilat
Eilat: Israel's Red Sea Gateway
Eilat sits at the northern tip of the Red Sea, where Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia meet within a few kilometres. The city borders Aqaba, Jordan to the east — the two downtowns are roughly 5 km apart. Year-round sunshine (330+ sunny days annually) and water temperatures that rarely drop below 20°C make Eilat a consistent destination for divers and snorkellers. The Coral Beach Nature Reserve, 7 km south of the city centre, protects one of the northernmost coral reef systems in the world.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along North Beach, a 2 km promenade facing the Gulf of Aqaba. The Hotel District north of the lagoon holds the largest 4- and 5-star properties. Budget guesthouses concentrate near the Central Bus Station on HaTmarim Boulevard. The Royal Beach and Taba border zone corridors offer quieter options for guests prioritising reef access over nightlife.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ben Gurion Airport is 350 km north; Ramon Airport (ETM), 18 km north of the city, handles most domestic and charter flights.
- Border crossing: The Wadi Araba crossing to Jordan is open daily; arrive early to avoid queues.
- Currency: New Israeli Shekel (ILS); most hotels accept USD and EUR at the desk.
- Climate: July highs reach 40°C — pack reef-safe sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.
