About Haifa
Haifa: Port City on the Slopes of Mount Carmel
Haifa sits on the northwestern coast of Israel, climbing from the Mediterranean shore up the terraced flanks of Mount Carmel. The city's most photographed landmark is the Bahá'í World Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose golden-domed shrine and 19 geometric garden terraces descend 1 km from the mountain ridge to the German Colony below. The gardens were completed in 2001 after decades of construction. Haifa is also Israel's principal deep-water port and the northern terminus of the country's rail network.
Visitors arrive for the Bahá'í gardens, the mixed Arab-Jewish neighbourhood of Wadi Nisnas — known for its street murals and winter Holiday of Holidays festival — and the Carmel Beach promenade. The Carmelit, Israel's only underground funicular railway, connects the lower Hadar district to Carmel Center in six minutes. The Technion — Israel Institute of Technology, founded in 1912, anchors Haifa's reputation as the country's technology hub.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The Carmelit runs Sunday–Friday; on Shabbat, use taxis or the limited bus network.
- Best base: The German Colony offers walkable access to the Bahá'í gardens and café-lined Ben Gurion Avenue.
- Entry: Ben Gurion Airport is 90 km south; direct trains connect Tel Aviv HaShalom to Haifa Merkavit HaMifratz in under an hour.
