About ‘Akko
'Akko: Crusader Citadel on the Mediterranean Shore
'Akko (also spelled Acre) sits on a narrow peninsula in northern Israel, 23 km north of Haifa, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Bay of Haifa. The city has been continuously inhabited for over 4,000 years and served as the Crusader capital of the Latin East from 1191 until its fall in 1291. That medieval layer remains remarkably intact: the Knights' Halls, a subterranean Crusader city excavated beneath the Old City, opened to visitors in the 1990s and now draw historians, archaeologists, and travellers in equal measure. UNESCO designated the Old City a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Where to Stay in 'Akko
Most hotels cluster in two zones. The Old City offers boutique guesthouses inside Ottoman-era stone buildings, placing guests within walking distance of the Al-Jazzar Mosque (built 1781), the covered Khan al-Umdan caravanserai, and the Templars' Tunnel. The modern Eastern Quarter provides larger 3- and 4-star properties with easier parking and direct road access to Route 4.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Direct trains run from Tel Aviv HaShalom to 'Akko station in roughly 1 hour 40 minutes; the station sits 700 m east of the Old City walls.
- Best timing: The Knights' Halls are cooler underground — allow 90 minutes for the full route.
- Fringe Festival: The annual Akko Theatre Festival fills the Crusader halls each October with avant-garde performances.
