About Tiberias

Tiberias: Gateway to the Sea of Galilee

Tiberias sits on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret), 209 metres below sea level — one of the lowest freshwater lakes on Earth. Founded by Herod Antipas around 20 CE and named after Emperor Tiberius, the city is one of Judaism's four holy cities and draws pilgrims, history travellers, and resort visitors year-round. The Old City promenade runs directly along the waterfront, while the hot springs at Hamat Tiberias National Park — first developed in the Roman period — remain active today.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster along the lakeside promenade and the hillside streets above it. The northern end of the waterfront sits closest to the ancient synagogue mosaic at Hamat Tiberias and ferry departures to Capernaum and Ein Gev. Budget guesthouses concentrate near the central bus station, while larger resort hotels occupy the southern shoreline.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Direct buses run from Tel Aviv (roughly 2 hours) and Jerusalem (2.5 hours) via Egged and Israel Railways to nearby Tzemach Junction.
  • Weather: Summers are hot and humid; temperatures regularly exceed 35 °C. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions.
  • Shabbat: Many restaurants and some hotels reduce services from Friday sundown to Saturday night — book meals in advance.
  • Currency: Israeli shekel (ILS); most hotels accept major credit cards.
