About Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv: Mediterranean Modernity on Israel's Shoreline

Tel Aviv sits on Israel's Mediterranean coast, founded in 1909 as a garden suburb north of Jaffa — one of the world's oldest port cities, now a creative quarter attached to the south of the city. The two together form a single municipality of roughly 460,000 residents, though the Greater Tel Aviv metro holds over 4 million. The city contains the largest concentration of Bauhaus architecture outside of Germany: the White City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, clusters roughly 4,000 International Style buildings across the Lichtenberg and surrounding neighborhoods. Rothschild Boulevard, a 2 km tree-lined promenade, anchors much of this district.

Where to Stay in Tel Aviv

Hotels concentrate in several distinct zones. Hayarkon Street and the beachfront strip from Gordon Beach north to Hilton Beach suit travelers prioritizing sea access. The Florentin neighborhood, southeast of the center, draws a younger crowd with independent guesthouses near street-art murals and late-night food stalls. Old Jaffa offers boutique hotels within 19th-century stone buildings, roughly 4 km south of Gordon Beach.

Practical Tips

  • Sabbath: Most public transport stops Friday sundown to Saturday night; book a hotel within walking distance of attractions or use ride-share apps.
  • Beach access: The municipality maintains 14 public beaches along 14 km of coastline, all free to enter.
  • Currency: The New Israeli Shekel (ILS) is standard; card payments are widely accepted.
