About Jerusalem
Jerusalem: Three Faiths, Four Quarters
Jerusalem sits 760 metres above sea level in the Judaean Hills, 60 km from Tel Aviv and 25 km from the Dead Sea. The Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site enclosed within 16th-century Ottoman walls, divides into four distinct quarters — Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Armenian — each walkable in minutes yet worlds apart in atmosphere. The Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Dome of the Rock stand within 500 metres of one another, making this the only city on earth where Judaism, Christianity, and Islam each claim their holiest ground.
Where to Stay in Jerusalem
Most hotels cluster around West Jerusalem, particularly the City Centre and Mamilla districts, putting guests within a 10-minute walk of the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City. East Jerusalem hotels along Salah ad-Din Street suit travellers focused on the Muslim Quarter or the Mount of Olives. A handful of guesthouses operate inside the Old City walls themselves, offering immediate access but minimal vehicle access.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The light-rail Line 1 connects the Central Bus Station to the Old City's Damascus Gate.
- Security: Bags are screened at most religious sites; allow extra time at entrances.
- Sabbath: Jewish West Jerusalem shuts down Friday sundown to Saturday night — stock provisions in advance.
- Climate: Summers are dry and hot (30 °C+); pack a layer for cool evenings year-round.
