About Erfoud

Erfoud: Morocco's Fossil Capital at the Sahara's Edge

Erfoud sits at the northern fringe of the Sahara Desert in the Tafilalt region of southeastern Morocco, roughly 50 km south of Rissani and 40 km from the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi. Founded as a French Foreign Legion garrison town in the 1930s, it serves as the main supply hub for travellers heading into the desert. The surrounding Ziz Valley is lined with one of Morocco's largest palm groves — over 800,000 date palms — and the annual Erfoud Date Festival each October draws traders from across the region.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels cluster along Avenue Moulay Ismail and the road toward Rissani, ranging from budget guesthouses to mid-range kasbah-style riads. 4WD excursions to Erg Chebbi depart daily and take approximately one hour. The town is also a centre for fossil artisans: local workshops cut and polish 350-million-year-old marine fossils — trilobites, orthoceras — extracted from the nearby Devonian limestone plateaux.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: CTM buses connect Erfoud to Errachidia (1.5 hrs) and onward to Fès (8 hrs).
  • Best season: October–April; summer temperatures regularly exceed 42 °C.
  • Currency: Moroccan dirham (MAD); ATMs available on the main avenue.
  • Pack layers for cold desert nights even in spring.
