About Merzouga
Merzouga: Gateway to Erg Chebbi
Merzouga is a small village in southeastern Morocco, roughly 50 km south of Erfoud and less than 1 km from the base of Erg Chebbi — a field of orange sand dunes that rise up to 150 m above the Sahara floor. The dunes are among the tallest in Morocco and shift visibly with seasonal winds. The village sits at approximately 1,100 m elevation, giving mornings a sharp chill even in summer. Camel treks, quad-bike rentals, and overnight camps in the dunes draw the bulk of visitors.
Where to Stay in Merzouga
Accommodation clusters along the western rim of Erg Chebbi, between the paved Route N13 and the dune edge. Most properties are auberges or desert camps — compact riads with terraces facing the sand. A smaller number of guesthouses sit in the village center near Café du Sud and the weekly market. Sunrise and sunset are the prime viewing windows; rooms on the east-facing dune side sell out early in October and March.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Shared taxis run from Erfoud (1 hr); the nearest airport is Errachidia RAK, 85 km north.
- Best season: October–April avoids temperatures above 40 °C; January nights drop near freezing.
- Currency: Moroccan dirham (MAD); few auberges accept cards — carry cash from Erfoud ATMs.
- Dune timing: Arrange camel or 4×4 departures at least one hour before sunrise for optimal light.
