About Merzouga
The most practical bases in Merzouga are the Hassilabied fringe for mid-range guesthouses a short walk from the dunes, the Ksar Merzouga village centre for budget riads and local restaurants, and the dune-edge camps east of the village for overnight Sahara stays. Most visitors arrive from Erfoud (50 km) or after the 4-hour drive from Fès and stay one to two nights.
Where to Stay in the Erg Chebbi Region
Ksar Merzouga village holds the greatest concentration of family-run riads and café terraces. Hassilabied, 2 km north, is quieter and closer to the northern dune corridor. For a full Sahara immersion, fixed camps on the dune perimeter offer Berber tents with private facilities; most include a camel ride at sunrise or sunset. Budget travellers cluster in the village; groups and honeymooners tend to choose the dune-edge camps.
Getting Around
Merzouga has no public transport within the village. 4WD transfers are the standard option from Rissani (17 km), the nearest town with a CTM bus stop and Wednesday souk. From Marrakech, the drive covers roughly 560 km via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Many visitors rent a vehicle in Fès or join a guided circuit from Marrakech.
Practical Tips
- Best time to visit: October to April; July–August temperatures exceed 45 °C at midday.
- Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD); ATMs are in Rissani, not in Merzouga itself.
- Sandstorms: Pack a scarf or buff for face protection — spring brings frequent chergui winds.
- Dune height: Erg Chebbi dunes reach up to 160 m, among the tallest in Morocco.
