About Sagada
Sagada: Mountain Province Hang Coffins and Limestone Caves
Sagada sits at roughly 1,500 metres above sea level in Mountain Province, Cordillera Administrative Region, about 150 km north of Baguio. The town is known for two singular sights: the Hanging Coffins of Echo Valley, where Kankanaey ancestors were interred on limestone cliffs centuries ago, and Sumaguing Cave, a cathedral-scale cavern requiring a guided descent through stalactite chambers. Pine forests cover the surrounding hills, and the Bomod-ok Falls — a 200-metre cascade — lies roughly 2 km from Barangay Banga-an via a rice-terrace trail.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Accommodation clusters along the main road near St. Mary the Virgin Church, built in 1904. Most properties are small guesthouses and inns; a handful of lodges operate near the cave entrances. Jeepneys connect Sagada to Bontoc (18 km south), which links onward to Baguio on a 6-8 hour bus route.
Practical Tips
- Entry fee: Register at the Sagada Tourism Office on arrival — required for all visitors.
- Cave guides: Hire licensed guides at the tourism office; independent access to Sumaguing is not permitted.
- Weather: Temperatures drop to 10°C from November through February — pack a warm layer.
- Roads: The Mountain Trail from Baguio involves steep switchbacks; buses run daily but book ahead during Holy Week.
