About Banaue
Banaue: Ifugao Terraces Carved 2,000 Years Ago
Banaue sits at roughly 1,200 metres elevation in Ifugao Province, northern Luzon, Philippines. The town is the gateway to the Banaue Rice Terraces, hand-carved by Ifugao ancestors an estimated 2,000 years ago and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The terraces cover approximately 10,360 square kilometres across the Cordillera highlands, with the Banaue viewpoint — 4 km from the town centre — offering the most photographed panorama. Visitors also travel to nearby Batad, a 13 km jeepney ride plus a 45-minute trek, for an amphitheatre-shaped terrace cluster still actively farmed.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Hotels and guesthouses line Banaue town proper, clustered near the market and the viewpoint road. Most properties are small, family-run lodges; a handful of mid-range hotels offer private bathrooms and mountain views. The journey from Manila takes 8–10 hours by overnight bus (terminal: Cubao, Quezon City). Jeepneys and tricycles connect Banaue to surrounding villages.
