About Vigan

Vigan: Colonial Capital of the Ilocos Coast

Vigan, founded by Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo in 1572, is the best-preserved colonial city in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The city sits on the northwestern coast of Luzon, roughly 408 km north of Manila. Its 16th-century street grid remains intact, anchored by Calle Crisologo — a cobblestone corridor of bahay na bato townhouses built from brick, timber, and capiz-shell windows. Horse-drawn calesas still ferry visitors along streets too narrow for modern traffic.

Where to Stay in Vigan

Most hotels concentrate within or immediately beside the Heritage Village, placing guests within walking distance of Plaza Salcedo, the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral (completed 1641), and the Syquia Mansion. Smaller heritage inns occupy restored colonial houses; larger guesthouses line Quirino Boulevard along the Mestizo River.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Buses from Manila's Cubao terminal reach Vigan in 8–9 hours; flights connect via nearby Laoag Airport, 89 km north.
  • Climate: The dry season runs November to April — the cooler months of December to February suit walking tours.
  • Local food: Vigan is known for longganisa (garlic sausage) and bagnet (deep-fried pork), both sold at the Vigan Public Market on Mabini Street.
  • Currency: Philippine peso; ATMs cluster near Plaza Salcedo.
