Where to Stay in Each Quarter

Albaicín offers whitewashed carmen houses and direct sightlines to the Alhambra palace complex, built between 1238 and 1358. It suits independent travellers and couples; note the steep cobbled lanes. Centro places guests within a five-minute walk of the Cathedral of Granada (consecrated 1561) and the Alcaicería silk market. Realejo, the former Jewish quarter south of the cathedral, has calmer streets and a mix of mid-range and boutique properties. Sacromonte, east of Albaicín on a hillside of cave dwellings, hosts flamenco zambra performances and a handful of cave hotels — a genuinely different stay.

Getting Around

The city centre is compact and largely walkable, though Albaicín and Sacromonte involve significant inclines. The C1 and C2 minibuses serve both hillside neighbourhoods from Plaza Nueva every few minutes. Granada's train station is 1.5 km northwest of the centre; high-speed AVE services connect to Madrid in about 3 hours 20 minutes.

• Free tapas: Bars in Centro and Realejo serve a free tapa with every drink — order at the bar.
