About Puebla de Sanabria

Puebla de Sanabria: Walled Town Above the Tera River

Puebla de Sanabria is a medieval walled town in Zamora province, Castile and León, perched on a granite promontory above the confluence of the Tera and Castro rivers. The Castle of the Counts of Benavente, built in the 15th century, anchors the old quarter alongside a Romanesque church and cobbled streets enclosed by largely intact stone walls. The town sits roughly 110 km northwest of Zamora city and 30 km from the Portuguese border.

Lago de Sanabria and the Natural Park

Three kilometres west of the old quarter, Lago de Sanabria — the largest glacial lake on the Iberian Peninsula at 318 hectares and up to 51 metres deep — draws swimmers, kayakers, and hikers from across northwest Spain, particularly in July and August. The surrounding Parque Natural Lago de Sanabria y Alrededores covers 22,365 hectares of glacially carved valleys, oak forest, and streams.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Trains from Madrid's Chamartín to Puebla de Sanabria take roughly 3 hours 15 minutes on the Alvia service.
  • Season: July–August fills accommodation quickly; May–June and September offer quieter access to the lake and lower rates.
  • On foot: The walled old quarter places the castle, church of Santa María del Azogue, and river views within a short walk of most lodging.
