About Valdevimbre
Valdevimbre
Valdevimbre sits in the León province of Castile and León, roughly 20 kilometres south of León city on the Castilian plateau. The municipality belongs to the Denominación de Origen León wine appellation — one of Spain's oldest wine regions — and its clay-rich soils produce Prieto Picudo, a red grape variety found almost nowhere else in the world. Rows of low-trained vines define the landscape across the comarca of Los Oteros, a flat, wind-exposed tableland at around 800 metres elevation.
Visitors come primarily for wine tourism. Bodegas here still operate traditional underground cellars called cuevas, hand-dug into hillsides over centuries and maintaining a natural 12–14 °C year-round — no refrigeration required. Several producers open for tastings and cellar walks. The village church of San Esteban, a Romanesque-influenced structure, anchors the compact historic centre. Pilgrims on the Via de la Plata, an ancient Roman road now used as a Camino de Santiago route, pass through the broader comarca.
Valdevimbre has a population of around 450 residents. León city, reachable in under 30 minutes by car, provides the nearest airport (León Airport, LEN) and full range of accommodation, though rural guesthouses within the municipality offer direct access to harvest-season events each October.
